Reviewing my Photography in 2010: Landscape and Cityscape

I've always enjoyed landscape and cityscape photography. Buildings and architecture, mountains and seas: none of them move! The photographer has complete free-rein to bring the subject to life through lighting, composition and so forth. This also means the photographer has nobody to blame but themselves.

I feel that in 2010 I have probably reached a plateau with my landscape photography, though my architectural shots have improved (especially on my weekend in Edinburgh). In 2011 I shall have to invest in a landscape course to improve.

Composed strictly with the rule of thirds. I'll learn that rules are made to be broken. Sometimes it doesn't matter that you don't have the best camera with you at the time. Feb 11

Dark gloom can set the tone for an industrial city-scape. Again, not the best camera I own, but the lighting was still dramatic. Apr 2

Vanishing points and repetition can make for interesting city photographs. Not all "white" lights are created equal. Be mindful of white balance: it might create an interesting artistic opportunity. Sep 5

I've been wanting to apply this kind of effect for a while. Gotcha! Once again, repetition and vanishing points. Sep 6

I've got the rule of thirds going on here again, but with a little more drama added to the image in post-processing. Using tone-mapping in my landscapes can help bring a little more detail where ordinarily it would be lost. I'll have to expose the image just right, however! Sep 18

Two things learned from this image: depth of field can be extremely narrow, and I need to go to the Tatton Flower Show for some plant-based photography in 2011. Again, using a little post-processing and tone-mapping can add a huge amount of drama to an image. Sep 25

Enhancing dark edges by teetering on the edge of HDR-halos. Who knows what this building was made out of before: it's made from the future now! Scoping out shoot locations is a great use of time, and you'll come back with completely different images. Oct 2

Don't fear an image which looks a little bland at first. Equally, don't mess with an image which had colour in it to start with. Oct 30

Don't stop experimenting.
