Always Have a Backup Plan

Last week I emailed “the date” to say, “ok, you said to email when I’m next coming down to London — well that should be 8th and 9th; will let you confirm for sure closer to the time”.

Thursday I finally managed to sort out all the details of when I was going, where I was staying, etc, so I emailed her, “Saturday 11am till Sunday 5pm; here’s a few ideas of places we could go, things we could do; here’s my number because I’ll be email-less; get in touch!”

Friday: no reply.

Saturday, when I set off (having not slept since Thursday on account of migraine): no reply.

Saturday, got to London, found Internet connection, sent another message, “I’m in London! Get in touch!”

Saturday, use Internet at hotel: she logged into the site earlier that day and so she’s read my messages… but no texts or calls? Take bucket of painkillers, get some sleep. Wake up two hours later in the middle of a thunderstorm. Phone-call from a friend. We meet up and have a blast.

Sunday morning: still no contact from the date.

Sunday 3pm: a text! … saying she was really sorry but she had a really bad case of the nerves.

But that’s ok — I still had a great time. You know it’s been a good weekend when you have to give you name and address to the police!
